Today I visited the Salzburg Landeskrankenhaus for the first time since I rotated here in 1990. As you can imagine, things have changed a bit: the buildings I remember are still here, but there has also been a great deal of construction, and the expanses of lawn (and the outdoor swimming pool for staff) are gone. Still, it was very exciting to be back. First, we went to the OR, to observe a complicated surgery that was (trust me) very interesting. Then we had a tour of the grounds, and I met up with one of my old colleagues from the surgery department, who is now it's head. We reminisced for a few minutes, and he told me the whereabouts of all the other colleagues I remember.
Next, we went to a famous coffee-house, Cafe Bazar, for lunch. Though I was tempted by the wuerstl mit semmel, senf, und krens (sausages with rolls, mustard, and horseradish, a typical Austrian lunch), I went for the somewhat lighter penne with tomato sauce, olives and fresh arugula instead. Then it was time for the academic program. RT and I each gave two talks, and three of the Austrian faculty gave talks as well. Here I am about to give my talks...notice the tray of beautiful little cakes in the background.
Love the blog..
