Jasper Fforde has written two series I love, Nursery Crimes and especially Thursday Next. He's like a post-modern Lewis Carroll: his books are surreal, with plenty of puns, allusions, word play, and literary jokes. I'll read anything he writes, so was thrilled to pick up Shades of Grey, the first in a new trilogy. It's about a post-apocalyptic world in which most people are color blind to one extent or another, and the ruling class is a "colorotocracy". Fforde is a great writer, but this is much darker and less fun than his previous work. I'd definitely recommend starting with The Eyre Affair, the first of the Thursday Next books.
