Every year in Omaha, there is a fundraiser called "art & soup". Today, I had my own mini-version of it. First, we got an early start at Speising, the large "orthopaedics-only" hospital in Vienna. It was a whirlwind day...we gave our talks, went to the OR (where I scrubbed on a pediatrics case), listened to lectures given to us by the staff, and went on a tour of the facility, which is a surprisingly harmonious combination of beautiful historic building, and modern construction, set in a park.
Then we went sightseeing...first to Belvedere, a pair of palaces (the upper one was the guest house) with gardens between them. The palaces themselves are now an art museum, with a great collection of medieval and baroque art, as well as a large number of works by modern Viennese painters such as Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka. Klimt's famous work "The Kiss" is at Belvedere. Then, after a walk through the center of the city, we stopped to eat at a traditional restaurant, where I enjoyed a nice, soothing bowl of cream of white asparagus soup, accompanied by a home-made pretzel, and a beer.
